The Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook is working on a plan to let its users arrange content by using hashtags, a technique long associated with Twitter.
That might leave Twitter with only "@" as an iconic ... well ... icon, although that symbol's uniqueness is watered down by email addresses and Facebook has horned in use of that device, as well.
Interestingly, hashtags are closely associated with -- but never exclusive to -- Twitter. The symbol, also known as a hash mark or a pound sign, are often incorporated into URL addresses as a way of directing traffic to a specific part of a site or page or tracking clicks.
As for the Facebook/Twitter #feud, WSJ reports:
Facebook is testing whether to follow Twitter's lead and allow users to click on a hashtag to pull up all posts about similar topics or events so it can quickly index conversations around trending topics and build those conversations up, giving users more reason to stay logged in and see more ads. Instagram, which Facebook acquired last year, already uses hashtags, allowing users to sort photos by the symbol.
