Prep Roundup, March 21: Bluffton softball team gives coach 100th win

SOFTBALL

Bluffton 5, Ashley Ridge 0: The Bobcats gave head coach Bill Ball his 100th win at the school, as Courtney Smith limited Ashley Ridge to two hits and struck out 10 in a complete game.

The Bobcats (7-0, 1-0) scored all five of their runs in the first two innings.

Jordyn Parker went 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs to lead the Bluffton offense. Morganne Paker was 2 for 4 with a run, and Mikyla Houghlan went 2 for 3.

Beaufort High 7, Fort Dorchester 4: Megan Cieplowski went 3 for 4 with a pair of long home runs, and Michelle Brown went 2 for 3 to lead the Eagles to victory.

Jenny Mullins got the win, giving up six hits and two walks.

The Eagles (14-3 overall, 1-0 Region 8-AAAA) had 11 hits. They play again Friday, hosting region favorite Summerville at 7 p.m.

JV: Beaufort High 16, Fort Dorchester 2

Hilton Head High 4, James Island 3: Whitney Halley pitched a complete game, striking out nine, and also scored the winning run for the Seahawks.

Halley got on base in the seventh and came around to score on Kensley Phillips' RBI triple. Ariana Tolerton had a two-run triple earlier for the Seahawks (3-6 overall, 3-0 region), who host Orangeburg-Wilkinson at 6 p.m. Friday.

Battery Creek 20, Burke 4 (3 innings): Laura Carter had four hits -- including two inside-the-park home runs -- scored four times and had six RBIs to lead the Dolphins.

Devin Mitchell had a double, a homer and scored four runs, and Autumn Gravel had a pair of hits and three RBIs. Emily Madlinger went 2 for 3 with a double and scored two runs.

Olivia Nolen gave up one run in two innings for the win.

Battery Creek (6-2, 5-0) hosts Academic Magnet at 5:30 p.m today.

Whale Branch 21, Allendale-Fairfax 10: Jessica Shipley got the win, going six innings. She struck out four, allowing four hits. On offense, she had three runs scored and two stolen bases for the Warriors (2-4, 2-1 Region 5-A).

Ciara Courtney led Whale Branch at the plate, going 3 for 5 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Kenyada Moultrie went 2 for 3 with a pair of triples, four RBIs, four runs and two stolen bases. Melissa Roberts had two doubles and three RBIs, Tanasia Campbell was 1 for 1 with three walks, and Autumn Moon had a triple and two RBIs

Whale Branch plays at Estill at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

BASEBALL

Beaufort High 9, Fort Dorchester 2: David Tilton went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Bradley Brown pitched six strong innings to lead the Eagles to the win.

Brown gave up five hits and struck out five in his six innings for the win.

Alex Hill went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Alex Silon and Madison Pike each went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Eagles (3-4 overall, 1-0 Region 8-AAAA), who play at Summerville at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hilton Head Island 2, James Island 0: Mat Clark (3-0) struck out nine and hurled a complete-game one-hitter to help the Seahawks improve to 6-0, 3-0 in Region 8-AAA.

Hilton Head Island managed just four hits but scratched together two runs when, after a single by Andrew Dill and a double by Caleb Martin, Clark grounded to short. The shortstop's throw went into right field, and Dill and Martin scored on the E6.

The Seahawks host Orangeburg-Wilkinson on Friday.

Whale Branch 10, Allendale-Fairfax 7: Malik Fields (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing just one earned run and striking out five in 2 2/3 innings. He didn't have a bad day at the plate, either, going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two stolen bases.

Dee Delaney was 2 for 3 with a triple, a run scored and two steals. Tim Campbell was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

The Warriors (2-4, 2-1 Region 5-A) play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Estill.

BOYS GOLF

Beaufort High: The Eagles finished third in a Region 8-AAAA match at Dataw Island's Morgan River course. Summerville finished first with 155, Ashley Ridge was second at 157 and Beaufort High had 164. Fort Dorchester (166) and Colleton County (232) also played in the nine-hole match.

Zak Butt of Ashley Ridge was medalist with a 34. Beaufort's Josh Fickes was second with a 35. Tommy Earl (42), Keaton Butler (42), Alex Porter (45) and Matthew Campbell (50) also competed for Beaufort, which will play in the 18-team Panther Invitational at Legend Oaks this Saturday and Sunday in Summerville.

SCISAA Region 3-AAA match: Hilton Head Christian cruised to victory in a region match it hosted at Chechessee Creek Club. Hilton Head Christian finished at 293, Pinewood Prep 318, Porter-Gaud 310, Hilton Head Prep 335 and First Baptist 372.

The Eagles' Bryson Nimmer was the medalist, firing a 70. He was followed by teammate JD Lehman with a 71. Also scoring for the Eagles were Jonathan Schuble (76) and RJ Bartolomucci (76)

Hilton Head Christian is back in action March 28 at Crescent Point in Bluffton.

Hilton Head Christian Academy: The Hilton Head Christian boys finished second as a team to host Porter-Gaud on Wednesday, led by victories from Jamario Williams, Zach Polk and Reed Shindell.

Polk placed first in the 200 meters, the high jump and the long jump. Williams won the 100 and 400, and Shindell was the discus champion in the nine-team meet.
