Prep roundup March 20: Hilton Head Christian gets by First Baptist in baseball

Luke Higgs wasn't dominant, but he got the job done for Hilton Head Christian.

The sophomore pitcher went five innings, surrendering six hits and six runs -- two each in the first, third and fifth innings -- as Hilton Head Christian (4-4, 1-1) beat First Baptist 11-6 in a SCISAA Region 3-AAA baseball game.

Fellow sophomore Caleb Workman pitched the final two innings, striking out two and allowing no hits, to earn the save. Workman was also 1 for 3 at the plate with an RBI.

JD Reichel had two hits and two RBIs, while Dalton Shaw had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Hilton Head Prep hosts Northwood at 6:30 p.m. Saturday

Hilton Head Prep 16, St. Andrew's 0: Randy Young and Cole Gardocki combined to strike out eight and allow just one hit over six innings for the Dolphins (6-2).

John Sheehan went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Jake Martin was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Martin has nine runs scored over last two games.

Young was 3 for 5 with three RBIs; Tyler Fox was 2 for 3 with two RBIs; Braden Mitchell was 1 for 2 with an RBI; Gardocki was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and JT Marbut was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

The Dolphins play at 4 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Day.

    Pinewood Prep 298, Hilton Head Christian 301, Porter-Gaud 310, Hilton Head Prep 328, First Baptist 389: Hilton Head Christian's JD Lehman and Hilton Head Prep's Mitchell Campbell shot 69s to share medalist honors Monday at the Ocean Course in Sea PInes, but Pinewood Prep took home the team victory.

    Also scoring for Hilton Head Christian were Bryson Nimmer (74), R.J. Bartolomucci (76) and Jonathan Schuble (82). For Hilton Head Prep, Zach Ruhlin (79), Robbie Morway (86) and John Larson (94) played.

    Hilton Head Christian and Hilton Head Prep will be in action Wednesday at Chechessee Creek.

    Hilton Head Island 163, Beaufort High 168: The Seahawks' Evan Reier shot a 38 at Dataw Island's Cotton Dike Course to earn medalist honors as Hilton Head Island beat host Beaufort High.

    Also playing for the Seahawks were Travis Mancill (40), Clayton Mancill (42), Marshall McGarity (43) and Charles Farrell (46). Alex Porter (40) led the way for Beaufort High, followed by Matthew Campbell (41), Tommy Earl (43), Josh Fickes (44) and Keaton Butler (44)

    Beaufort hosts a region match Wednesday at Dataw Island featuring Summerville, Ft. Dorchester, Ashley Ridge, Colleton County and Bluffton.

    BOYS SOCCER

    Bluffton 7, Colleton County 0: Fabrizio Camera scored twice, and Sage Cross, Wanerger Velasquez, Miguel Jiminez, Richard Snyder and Johnny Escamilla added single goals as the Bobcats moved to 2-0 in Region 8-AAAA.

    "We got a great defensive effort from our back four, and Will Holland was a genius in the midfield as usual," Bluffton coach Josh Fox said.

    Kevin Millan had two saves in goal on the way to a shutout.

    Bluffton plays Thursday at Pinewood Prep.

    Battery Creek 5, Woodland 0: William Lopez scored two goals and had two assists to lead the Dolphins (3-2-2, 2-2 Region 6-AA) past Woodland.

    John Saullo added two goals and an assist, while Kale Slade had the Dolphins' fifth goal. Caleb Campbell added an assist.

    Miguel Mejia had four saves in goal for Battery Creek, which plays at 7 p.m. Thursday at North Charleston.

    Lipscomb Academy (Tenn.) 4, Hilton Head Prep 3: Will Peterkin, Teron Daley and Noah Sulek scored in the Dolphins' loss, and Logan Clark assisted on all three.

    Zen Wiggins had seven saves in goal for Hilton Head Prep (2-3), which hosts Cathedral Academy at 5 p.m. Thursday.

    Beaufort Academy 5, James Island Christian 0: Nicky Macuch scored twice and Reyn Robinson earned his third shutout of the season in goal as the Eagles (4-1, 3-0) rolled.

    Conner Akers and Clay Melville added goals, while Beaufort Academy benefitted, as well, from a James Island Christian own goal.

    George Sanford had two assists off corner kicks for the Eagles, who host St. Andrew's Tuesday.

  • Ridgeland-Hardeeville 7, North Charleston 0: Two goals apiece from Alex Morales and Abraham Lopez at North Charleston led the Jaguars (4-1, 3-1 Region 6-AA) to the win.

    Adrian Morales had a goal and two assists, Martin Sotelo added a goal and an assist and Marcos Cisca scored a goal. Alan Cruz had an asssist.

    Ridgeland-Hardeeville will host Whale Branch at 6 p.m. Friday.

    Summerville 2, Beaufort High 1, OT: Josh Vellucci scored the Eagles' lone goal.

    Beaufort High (5-1, 1-1 Region 8-AAAA) will play Friday at Ashley Ridge.

    GIRLS SOCCER

    Battery Creek 5, Woodland 2: Three first-half goals spurred the Dolphins' Region 6-AA victory. Caroline Vido opened the Battery Creek scoring, followed by Ally Garcia, who was assisted by Cali Collier. Kimberly Vigil scored off a penalty kick to close Battery Creek's scoring for the first half.

    Marjury Gonzalez, assisted by Tori Hill, and a Woodland own goal closed out the scoring for Battery Creek. Tabitha Spurlock had five saves in goal for the Dolphins (3-2, 3-1), who play Thursday at North Charleston.

    Beaufort Academy 3, James Island Christian 1: Goals by Miranda Weslake and Mary Alice Strohmayer gave the Eagles (6-0) a 2-0 lead at the half, and Xavia Lemott's second-half goal sealed the deal.

    The Eagles host St. Andrew's on Tuesday.

    North Charleston 3, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 1, OT: Edna Bernal scored the Jaguars' lone goal on the road as they fell to 1-3.
