A man accused of striking his roommate in the head early Tuesday when the roommate wouldn't lend his car was arrested later that night after the suspect's brother reported him to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
William Harold Dunbar, 36, was charged with high and aggravated battery and assault, and strong-arm robbery. He was in the Beaufort County Detention Center on Wednesday, with bond set at $100,000, according to the jail log.
At about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, deputies found a 68-year-old man bleeding from the head at a home in Bon Aire Estates. The man said his roommate hit him with an iron object when he refused to hand over his car keys. The roommate took cash from the victim's dresser and fled.
Deputies went to a motel on Boundary Street at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a tip. The suspect's brother said Dunbar had just left to walk to a nearby store, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies found him behind a convenience store, and said he tried to flee across Boundary Street toward the marsh.
The brother said Dunbar contacted him Tuesday evening to say he needed a place to stay, and he said would pay cash if his brother would rent him a room at the motel.
