A Bluffton woman remained in critical condition at a hospital in Savannah Monday afternoon following a carsh last week with an 18-wheeler, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

Pansy Young, 61, suffered serious injuries after she turned in front of a tractor-trailer Thursday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. 278 and Buck Island Road.

Bluffton Police spokesman Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said Young was found to be at fault for failure to yield the right of way to the tractor-trailer.

Young was making a left turn at about 4:40 p.m. from westbound U.S. 278 onto Buck Island Road when the tractor-trailer, which was traveling east on U.S. 278, crashed into the passenger side of her Cadillac. Young was extricated from the wreckage by firefighters from the Bluffton Township Fire District and flown by LifeStar helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

Eastbound traffic on U.S. 278 was re-routed for about an hour because of the crash. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and Young was the only one inside the vehicle, Babkiewicz said.
