Sheriff's Office investigating Bluffton armed robbery

Published: March 18, 2013

An intoxicated 29-year-old man says he was robbed at gunpoint in a wooded lot between Bluffton House and Lowcountry Presbyterian Church Saturday morning, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies responded to Bluffton House apartments just before 5 a.m. to a reported armed robbery. The man told deputies he had walked to Walgreen's to purchase beer and was on his way back when he was attacked. The victim said a black man grabbed him from behind and held him in a bear hug.

The victim managed to struggle free, only to find a handgun pointed at him, according to the Sheriff's Office. The black man grabbed the beer and fled with a white or Hispanic male, who reportedly did not participate in the robbery, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

The victim was drunk at the time and provide several conflicting accounts of the incident, according to the release. He was not seriously injured.

The suspect was described as 20 to 30 years old, about 5-foot-10-inches tall, 180 pounds, with long, black dreadlocks. He wore a blue and red hooded sweatshirt and khaki pants. The other man with him was described only as wearing a white shirt and black pants.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator Sgt. B. Chapman at 843-255-3417 or Crimestoppers.
