SC unemployment ticks upward in January

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in South Carolina increased slightly from 8.6 percent in December to 8.7 percent in January, mirroring the national trend.

The U.S. unemployment rate rose from 7.8 percent in December to 7.9 percent in January.

In South Carolina, 1.9 million were employed in January. There were 188,000 unemployed during the month. Since January 2012, employment has increased by 26,840, according to a news release Monday from the state's Department of Employment and Workforce.

The information sector, which gained 600 jobs, was the only sector to grow in January in South Carolina.
