Beal deals for Gamecocks in SEC opener at Missouri, strikes out 10

Sophomore right-hander Evan Beal struck out a career-high 10 batters as fifth-ranked South Carolina defeated Missouri, 4-1, on Friday night in the Southeastern Conference opener in Columbia, Mo.

Grayson Greiner homered and scored a pair of runs, and TJ Costen had a key two-run single for the Gamecocks (16-2). Joey Pankake had an RBI single, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

In his second start of the year, Beal (2-0) allowed one run on eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. Senior Tyler Webb worked 1 1-3 perfect innings of relief for his sixth save.

Kendall Keeton went 3 for 5 and Logan Pearson went 2 for 5 to lead Missouri (5-8) at the plate.

Missouri starter Rob Zastryzny (1-3) took the loss. He went seven innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.

Due to the weather forecast on Sunday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
