S.C. Electric & Gas warns customers of reported scam

Published: March 15, 2013

Several S.C. Electric & Gas customers have reported they've been scammed, according to a news release. Someone, they say, called them on the phone portraying an SCE&G employee and asked that they purchase a payment card from a local voncenience or drug store and call back with the card's information for immediate bill payment.

When SCE&G employees call concerning an unpaid bill, they identify themselves. They would not ask customers to purchase payment cards for bill payment purposes. Bill payments are accepted at SCE&G businesses offices, by mail, authorized payment agencies, online or by calling 1-800-450-9160.

If an employee is scheduled to arrive at a customer's home, the customer will be notified by phone or in writing. Employees will wear blue SCE&G uniforms and a white company ID badge with a photo. They drive marked SCE&G trucks.

If customers are unsure of a caller or worker's identity, they can call customer service at 1-800-251-7234. If someone arrives unannounced and without company identification, SCE&G recommends calling 911 if a customer feels threatened.

If you believe you've been a victim of this scam, call 1-800-251-7234.
