The 19-event 2013 AAA Car Care S.C. Triathlon Series opens at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Parris Island Sprint triathlon at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

The sprint-distance course starts at the Parris Island Military Combat Training Pool with a 500-meter swim. The 10-mile bike course is flat and fast, as is the 3.1-mile run.

The field is diverse, with athletes from 12 states and Canada ranging in age from 11 to 83.

Lancaster's Paul Webster, 83, first participated in the race in 2004 at the age of 74.

"Parris Island is my favorite (triathlon)" said Webster, who says he will continue to compete in the event as long as he can meet the time deadline. He finished the race in 1:59.24 last year.

Carl Eichert of Laurel, Md., was the men's winner in 2012 with a time of 51:32, while Bluffton's Kelli King won the women's race in 56:56.
