Local golf notebook, March 14: Colleton River hires Bakels

Bluffton's Colleton River Plantation Club has hired Timothy Bakels as its new general manager and chief operating officer. He will assume his new post in May.

Bakels has served as the general manager and COO of Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J. for the past seven years. Prior to that, he was the general manager and vice president for Desert Highlands in Scottsdale, Ariz., also for seven years.

He has also held general manager positions at the Marbella Golf and Country Club in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and the Bahia Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, Calif.

IJGT SHAMROCK SHOOTOUT

Palmetto Hall Plantation will host the International Junior Golf Tour's Shamrock Shootout on Saturday and Sunday. The two-day, 36-hole event to be played on the Robert Cupp Course features top junior golfers from around the Southeast in three divisions -- Boys 15-19, Boys Under 14 and Girls Under 19.

The IJGT's Discovery Tour, for golfers ages 8 to 12, will host it's first 18-hole tournament of the year on Saturday. Players are encouraged t have a caddy, who will be allowed to carry the bag, assist with rules and offer advice.

HOLE-IN-ONE

* Jim Bergman hit a hole-in-one March 11 on the 17th hole at Hidden Cypress Golf Club. He used a 5-hybrid. Witnesses were Al Palmer, Jae Lee, and Larry Johnson.
