USC Beaufort set to host Sand Shark Classic

sports@islandpacket.comMarch 10, 2013

USC Beaufort's men's golf team should get a good idea where it stacks up in the Sun Conference this week when 10 of the 11 golf teams in the league are among the 15 teams competing in the 2013 Sand Shark Classic at Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie.

The teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 holes Tuesday. Play is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Monday with players teeing off from the first and 10th holes, and the event will conclude with a 9 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.

The host Sand Sharks are the defending champions after claiming last year's team title with a 54-hole score of 877 at Chechessee Creek Club, 12 shots better than Coastal Georgia and 17 shots clear of Johnson & Wales, Shorter and Webber International.

The field for this year's tournament will feature three teams ranked in the NAIA preaseason top 25 -- No. 7 Lee, No. 14 Johnson & Wales and No. 21 USC Beaufort -- and two more that received votes for the top 25 in Thomas and Webber International.

Monday-Tuesday, Oldfield Golf Club, Okatie

The field: Asbury (Ky.), Ave Maria (Fla.), Averett (Va.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.), Johnson & Wales (Fla.), Lee (Tenn.), Northwood (Fla.), USC Beaufort, Southeastern (Fla.), St. Andrews (N.C.), St. Thomas (Fla.), Spalding (Ky.), Thomas (Ga.), Warner (Fla.), Webber International (Fla.)
