Sheriff's Office: Woman arrested after interfering with boyfriend's arrest

Staff reportsMarch 10, 2013

A woman tried to block a deputy from chasing down her boyfriend in Seabrook on Friday afternoon, resulting in her arrest, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The chase began when a deputy pulled over Robert Washington, 53, who was wanted on five bench warrants and had a suspended license, according to the report.

Washington jumped out off the car near some mobile homes on Bessie Lane. As Washington was running, his girlfriend, Jessica Miller, came out of a nearby residence and collided with him, knocking him down, the report said.

Miller allegedly tried to stop the deputy from arresting Washington while he was on the ground, the report said. With "no time to give commands to Miller," the deputy grabbed her by the forearms and threw her off to the right as he put Washington in handcuffs, the report said.

Miller continued trying to push the deputy off of Washington, at one point kicking him "in the chest with both feet." When she was placed in the back of a patrol car in cuffs, she kicked the passenger side rear handle and broke it, causing more than $2,000 in damage, the report said.

Washington is being held for prosecution on the magistrate bench warrants, driving under suspension third offense and fleeing to evade in lieu of $9,723 bond, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log.

Miller is charged with hindering a police officer, malicious injury to property and assault and battery in the third degree. Her bond has not been set, according to the jail log.
