Prep Roundup, March 9: Hilton Head boys score 3 times in 2nd half to drop Bluffton

BOYS SOCCER

Hilton Head Island High 3, Bluffton 1: Eliot McPherson scored early in the second half to break a scoreless tie, and Chip Tremarelli added two more goals to help the Hilton Head Island High School boys soccer team earn a 3-1 win Friday night at Bluffton High School, the Seahawks' seventh straight victory over the Bobcats. Goalie Connor Goulet made seven saves for the Seahawks (4-1), who host Stall at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Hilton Head Christian Academy 6, First Baptist 1: Will McCutchen scored twice, and Tyler Chisholm, Caleb Lewis and Zach McCutchen added goals. Nick Pirozzi and Lewis each had an assist for the Eagles (4-1 overall, 2-1 region), who play Monday at Bulloch Academy in Statesboro, Ga.

Hilton Head Christian Academy 6, Whale Branch 0 (Thursday): Will McCutchen scored twice, and Caleb Lewis, Nick Pirozzi, Clay Oliver and JR Moise each had one goal for the Eagles.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hilton Head Christian Academy 5, First Baptist 0: Lexi Lainhart scored two goals, and Allison Meeder scored on a penalty kick for the Eagles. Hannah Reynolds and Alyssa Lane added goals, and Rebecca Meeder and Abigail Bensch each had an assist for HHCA (3-3 overall, 2-2 region), which plays again at 4 p.m. Monday at Bulloch Academy (Ga.).

Battery Creek 7, Garrett Tech 1 (Thursday): Kim Vigil scored three goals to lead the Dolphins to a Region 5-AA victory.

BASEBALL

Battery Creek 16, Whale Branch 6 (6 innings): Thomas Smith went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles for Battery Creek, including a two-run double to end the game by the 10-run rule. Aaron Brantley went 2 for 2 with three walks and two stolen bases, and Michael Jennings and Jason Padgett were 2 for 3. Craig Capano started and got the win, pitching three innings for the Dolphins (1-2), who host Bluffton at 6 p.m. Monday.

Dee Delaney was 1 for 2 with a triple and two runs scored, and Tim Campbell and Malik Fields went 2 for 3 for Whale Branch.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville 11-8, Baptist Hill 1-1: The Jaguars were supposed to play two five-inning games, but Game 1 was called after three innings because of the 10-run rule. Tyler Jones struck out seven in three innings for the win, while going 1 for 1 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Shawn Wilson was 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored, and Ransom Dunham scored three runs.

In Game 2, Jones struck out eight more in three innings for the win and Dunham struck out four in two innings. Wilson was 1 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored. Dennis Cheyney added a hit, a steal and a run scored.

SOFTBALL

Beaufort High 23, Battery Creek 2: Augusta Schubert hit a double in one of the few highlights for Battery Creek (2-1), which plays again at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Ridgeland-Hardeeville.

JV: Beaufort High 9, Battery Creek 1 (4 innings)

Colleton County 7, Hilton Head Island High 6: Whitney Halley went the distance and took the loss despite allowing no earned runs. She had six strikeouts. She also went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Seahawks (0-3), who led 2-1 until the sixth inning. Caitlin Buckalew was 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Hilton Head, which hosts Beaufort High at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island High 16, Savannah Raiders 3: Haley Matousek scored five goals, while Jazzie Morgan, Mary Piper Martel and Carson Kendrick scored two apiece to lead the Seahawks. Abby Ogden added a goal and seven assists, and Jess Morris, Kirsten Wartko, Katy Bautista and Tristyn Sheaffer each had one goal.

Shayra Valdez made five saves for the Seahawks (3-1), who host Ashley Hall at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

BOYS TENNIS

Hilton Head Island High 4, Beaufort High 2: The Seahawks opened their season with a hard-fought win over the Class 4-A Eagles.

"It was a great opener for us," said Jennifer Weitekamper, who has taken over as coach of the Hilton Head High boys team in addition to coaching the girls in the fall.

Hilton Head High (1-0) opens region play at 4 p.m. Tuesday at James Island.
