Red Cross launches tornado app

Published: March 7, 2013

The American Red Cross has launched its free tornado app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Available in English or Spanish, the app tells users in real time what to do before, during and after a tornado, according to a news release. It emits a high-pitched siren to alert people when a tornado warning is issued for their area, as well as an "all clear" when it's over.

Other features include weather maps, "I'm safe" messaging, checklists, location of open Red Cross shelters and a tool kit with a flashlight.

The tornado app is the latest in a series created by the Red Cross, including ones for hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires.

The apps can be found in the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store for Android, or at redcross.org/mobile apps.
