Penn State golfers leading 4-team invitational at Colleton River

sports@islandpacket.comMarch 7, 2013

The four teams competing in the Colleton River Collegiate golf tournament came to Bluffton to get in some warm-weather golf. What they got was a cold wind.

Penn State played its way to an eight-stroke first-round lead over Michigan on a day that saw play shortened from 36 to 18 holes because of high winds at the par-72, 7,365-yard Dye Course.

Led by X. McDonald-Smith and Jay Woodward, who each shot 6-over 78s and stand tied in second, the Nittany Lions shot a 317. The Wolverines were second, followed by host Michigan State (330) and Detroit Mercy (337).

Michigan State's Jon Finley, playing as an individual, is the individual leader at 5-over-par 77. Tied for second with the Penn State duo is Michigan's Miguel Echaverria, also playing as an individual.
