Prep Roundup, March 6: Beaufort High boys soccer team shuts out Battery Creek

BOYS SOCCER

Beaufort High 2, Battery Creek 0: Josh Vellucci scored his ninth goal of the season, off an assist from Josh Gutierrez, and Hector Garcia-Lopez also scored to help the Beaufort High School boys soccer team improve to 4-0 on the season.

Goalkeeper Brooks Wilson made five saves for the shutout for the Eagles, who are off until they host Fort Dorchester on March 15.

Miguel Mejia made eight saves in goal for Battery Creek (0-1), which hosts Garrett Tech at 7 p.m. Thursday.

JV: Battery Creek 0, Beaufort High 0

Bluffton 16, Whale Branch 0: Fabricio Camera notched four goals, and Richard Snyder and Akeel Crooks added three apiece as Bluffton routed Whale Branch.

Jose Ceron chipped in two goals for the Bobcats, and goalkeeper Kevin Millan logged the shutout without having to make a save.

Now 2-1, Bluffton next hosts rival Hilton Head High at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hilton Head Island High 3, Summerville 0: Seniors Blake Bishop, Chip Tremarelli and Chris MacMurray scored goals as the Seahawks improved to 3-1.

Hilton Head High plays at Bluffton at 7 p.m. Friday.

BASEBALL

Northwood Academy 3, Thomas Heyward Academy 1: Brodie Etheridge went 2 for 3 with a triple, and Zack Newton was 2 for 4 in the Rebels' season-opening loss at the Warhawk Invitational in Walterboro.

Conner Driscoll, J.D. Tuten and Evan Duncan each went 1 for 3.

Ryan Day took the loss, giving up two hits and two runs in 3 1-3 innings. He struck out four. Jason Quick gave up a run in one inning, and Newton pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

The Rebels (0-1) continue play in the tournament Thursday, taking on Colleton Prep.

Hilton Head Christian 19, Memorial Day 3: Luke Higgs was one of six Eagles with at least two hits, and he also struck out 10 batters in four hitless innings on the mound as Hilton Head Christian opened its season with a big win.

Ryan Barrett led the Hilton Head Christian bats with three hits and three RBIs. Reese Dolyniuk and J.D. Reichel each had two hits and four RBIs, Caleb Workman had two hits and three RBIs, Higgs had a pair of hits and RBIs, and Andy Ballard added two hits.

Hilton Head Christian (1-0) hosts St. Andrew's at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville 14, Step of Faith 1 (5 innings): Tre Waiters earned the win for the Jaguars, striking out seven and allowing no earned runs. He gave up two hits and walked three.

Shawn Wilson was 2 for 2 with two runs and two stolen bases, and Frank Fields was 1 for 2 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville travels to Baptist Hill on Friday for a doubleheader, which starts at 5 p.m.

Windsor Forest 9, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 5 (Monday): The Jaguars held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning but couldn't hold on.

Ransom Dunham led the Jaguars' offense, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Frank Fields went 2 for 3 with a run.

Diquan Mitchell gave up three runs in five innings, allowing four hits.

JV: Savannah Christian 5, Whale Branch 3

Middle school: Hilton Head Island 2, Beaufort 1

BOYS TENNIS

Bluffton 4, Savannah Country Day 3: A sweep of the two doubles matches helped the Bobcats win their season opener.

Bluffton is idle until hosting Hilton Head Christian next Tuesday.
