Traffic checkpoint leads to several drug citations

Published: February 28, 2013

A traffic safety checkpoint by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Unit Wednesday on Lady's Island yielded one charge for possession of crack cocaine, three charges of simple possession of marijuana and two driving-under-suspension charges.

During the checkpoint, authorities also recovered a vehicle that was later reported stolen from the Port Royal Police Department's jurisdiction. The vehicle was abandoned in the roadway near the checkpoint area at the intersection of Lady's Island Drive and Island Causeway.

During the checks, two warning tickets also were issued for vehicle-license offenses, and one citation was issued for an open container of beer or wine.
