Town's flyover reversal waste of time, money

info@islandpacket.comFebruary 28, 2013

Let me begin by stating that I am neither for nor against the flyover to connect Bluffton Parkway and U.S. 278.

I am, however, very much in favor of efficient and effective government, which we seem to see less and less of at all levels of government.

The closest-to-home example is the flyover project. After years (yes, years) of planning, preparation, effort and expense, the Hilton Head Island Town Council decided at the eleventh hour to reverse its position and withdraw support for the flyover.

Town officials had innumerable opportunities over a long period of time to do their homework, develop judgments and present alternatives in an orderly fashion. Instead, they waited until it was time to start construction. To reverse the course this project has been on for so long would have imposed new studies, approvals, additional expense and loss of considerable state funding.

All I can say is shame on our local politicians, excluding the mayor, who stuck with his original vote, and Councilman Lee Edwards, who has been against the project since the beginning.
