No sign of break-in at burned Bluffton golf cart shed

The blackened frames of golf carts were all that remained in the still-smoldering wreckage of the Eagle's Pointe Golf Club cart barn Saturday after a fire the night before destroyed the structure.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has found no signs that anyone broke into the Eagle's Pointe golf course cart shed before it burned to the ground Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Eagle's Pointe Property Owners' Association is advising residents to avoid fishing or going into the course's lagoons. Though unlikely, battery acid might have trickled into the water, according to an email from the association to its members.

Course general manager Brent Carlson said there is no evidence so far that has happened, and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control is testing as a precaution.

"We are working with them on making sure there wouldn't be anything out of line with that," Carlson said.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating the fire but has not yet determined its cause, according to a news release Monday.

At about 7:30 p.m. Friday, a small fire spotted by a resident behind the building quickly spread. More than a dozen firefighters from the Bluffton Township Fire District spent three hours extinguishing the flames, which consumed the shed and 80 golf carts -- the club's entire supply.

According the Sheriff's Office, a golfer who left the driving range at about 6:45 p.m. did not see any suspicious activity or signs of a fire.

No employees are believed to have been at the course when the fire began, the release said.

The course has since reopened with about two dozen carts on loan from Textron Financial Corp., the company that owns the Eagle's Pointe and Crescent Pointe clubs.

The Eagle's Pointe fire is the second such fire in southern Beaufort County in recent months. In November, the Bear Creek Golf Club cart shed in Hilton Head Plantation was destroyed in what the Sheriff's Office has said was arson.
