Tournament brings high school golf teams to Golden Bear on Hilton Head

Like just about everybody else involved with an outdoor sporting event in the area this weekend, Hilton Head Christian Academy boys golf coach Doug Langhals was paying attention to the rainy weather on Friday.

"It's in the process of getting soggy right now," Langhals said of the course at Golden Bear Golf Club, where the Eagles will host the first Golf Etc. Golden Bear High School Invitational.

Fourteen teams -- including area schools Beaufort High, Hilton Head Christian, Hilton Head Island High and Hilton Head Prep -- will tee it off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday in the island's only high school team tournament.

Langhals loves this kind of preseason event for the Eagles, who will have to replace Will Miles and Kyle Weaver, two golfers consistently in the team's top five last season.

"With half our team just coming out of basketball, being at a small school, this will be a great gauge of where we're at," Langhals said. "Guys haven't had time at this point in the season to fine-tune their games."

There are two things Langhals said he looks for from his players early in the season.

"First is their character development," he said. "How do they act as they deal with adversity."

"Second is their mindset of working together as a team," he said. "Understanding the critical nature of every shot, even if you're not on your best game."

As for the weather, Langhals isn't worried.

"Our players are very used to competitive golf, playing in the elements, playing in the weather," he said. "I don't think it makes that big a difference."
