  • The Hilton Head Island Barbershoppers will present "An Historic Journey Through Barbershop Harmony -- Its Music and Its People" at 7:30 p.m. March 1 and 2 at the Hilton Head Island High School Visual and Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 the day of the event, and are available at Burke's Main Street Pharmacy and Celebration Supplies on Hilton Head. Details: 843-290-9517, www.hhibarbershoppers.org

The Hilton Head Island Barbershoppers will provide more than a capella harmonizing at their upcoming shows. Chorus manager Dick Tyrrell will give a presentation highlighting the past 150 years of barbershop music.

Tyrrell said the shows will go back and forth between his narration and related songs performed by the local all-men's group.

He will begin with the Civil War period, go through the "Gay '90s" (the 1890s) and all the way to today's barbershoppers groups. He will talk about the Barbershop Harmony Society and the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.

Tyrrell said there will be plenty of opportunities for the audience to sing along to songs such as "The Sidewalks of New York" and "Sweet Adeline."

"It's a lot of fun," Tyrrell said.

He said the annual show raises money to promote music in local high schools. Over the years the group has provided CDs, microphones and scholarships to area schools. He said his group is trying to develop a youth chorus in the Lowcountry to expose more children to barbershopping harmony.

Tyrrell said while most of the audience has been older in the past, several schools are planning to bring children to this year's shows.

Youth chorus Savannah Storm will perform as well.

"People come from year to year because they just enjoy, I think, the relaxation of listening to music that they're familiar with," he said.
