Why object to plans to curb assault weapons?

Published: February 20, 2013

What are our legirs (state Sen. Tom Davis for one) and other General Assembly members smoking when they propose that South Carolina ignore President Barack Obama's executive orders and laws regarding gun control?

No upstanding, moral U.S. citizen should fear enhanced background checks. In addition, what self-respecting "sportsperson" needs an automatic assault rifle or a rifle that can otherwise rapidly fire 20-plus bullets? None of the animals they hunt ever fights back or offers any form of resistance.

The same goes for handguns with magazines that contain more than six to eight rounds. How often does a home invasion develop into the shootout at the OK Corral?

The Second Amendment to the Constitution was written at a time when America had no standing army. Our militiamen had to be ready to defend our shores in case of invasion. With the best equipment available, they could fire two to four shots a minute. This was more than enough to fend off the best army in the world at the time.

Maybe all those who still think automatic, large magazine assault weapons and handguns must still be in their personal arsenals should visit their local military recruiter and sign up. At least then they could use their weapons in defense of the U.S. rather than killing defenseless animals, or God forbid, helpless men, women and children.
