Two people were taken by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash on S.C. 170 near Goethe Hill Road.

The driver of a red Isuzu SUV in the eastbound lane was ejected from the car as a result of the accident, which happened at about 4 p.m., Burton Fire District Lt. Chris Moyer said. A female passenger also was injured.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating, but attempts to reach officials for more information about the victims were unsuccessful.

Moyer said he did not know the severity of their injuries or if they were wearing seat belts.

A golden Labrador-like dog also was ejected from the SUV. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Animal Control unit tried unsuccessfully to find the dog after the crash, Moyer said.

It's not clear what caused the crash. A light rain was falling at the time of the crash. Moyer said the vehicle might have flipped, however, it was upright when firefighters arrived.

The crash slowed traffic along the highway but was cleared by about 4:45 p.m.
