Man injured in shooting at Hilton Head Island apartments

Published: February 18, 2013

A 31-year-old Hardeeville man was seriously injured when he was shot at a Hilton Head Island apartment complex Sunday afternoon and remains hospitalized, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said no description of the shooters at Hilton Head Gardens is available, and they continue to search for cooperating witnesses.

Deputies arrived at the complex at 4:30 p.m. after multiple people reported shots were fired at a nearby pond, according to a news release.

While responding to the reports of the shooting, they were notified that a gunshot victim had just arrived at Hilton Head Hospital.

Deputies interviewed the injured man, who said he and a friend had gone to the apartments to visit an unidentified woman and heard gunshots behind them as they were walking, the release said.

The man was struck several times and his friend, who was not injured, took him to the hospital. Neither of them could describe the shooter or shooters, and no motive has been determined, the release said.

The man has since been transferred to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment, where he is in stable but serious condition.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact either investigator Sgt. L. Albertin at 843-255-3413 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC (274-6372.)
