Beaufort's Candice Glover in American Idol's Top 40

Published: February 15, 2013

St. Helena Island native Candice Glover has made it through another round on American Idol.

Glover, 23, sang Alicia Keys' hit "Girl on Fire" on the show Thursday night, and the judges were impressed enough with her performance to move her on to the show's Las Vegas round. She's now one of the Top 40 contestants -- and one of the Top 20 girls -- on the show.

"You took it and did your own thing with it in such a powerful way that that sounded like a massive, big record," judge Keith Urban said.

As Glover left the stage, judge Nicki Minaj said, "I really like her."

This is Glover's third appearance on the show. In 2010, Glover's first year on the show, she was eliminated after making it to the top 60 contestants. In 2012, she made it to the top 40, but was cut in the Las Vegas round of the show.

Charleston resident Haley Davis didn't make it to the Top 40. There was some tension among the group of girls she sang with after Davis, 27, went to bed while her group members wanted to continue rehearsing. The group sang "Sin Wagon" by the Dixie Chicks.
