Man robbed, thrown from pickup truck in Bluffton

Published: February 12, 2013

A 25-year-old man reported at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday he had been robbed and assaulted in Bluffton while riding in a truck with two unknown men.

According to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office news release, the victim said a man whom he knew only as "Red Dog" called him at 11 p.m. Monday to invite him to drinks at a Bluffton bar. The two had met several weeks ago at a bar on Hilton Head Island.

"Red Dog" and another man arrived at a motel on Hilton Head to pick up the victim. The victim got into an older model red or maroon pickup truck with the men and traveled to Bluffton. When they were near 1380 Fording Island Road, east of Malphrus Road, one of the men began to choke the victim and demand money. The victim struggled with the suspect, who took the victim’s wallet and cellphone.

The suspect then pushed the victim from the moving truck, according to the release. The victim rolled into a ditch and hid until he was certain the suspects were gone. He then walked west on U.S. 278.

A passerby saw the victim near Sheridan Park and helped him call the Sheriff’s Office. The victim was taken to Hilton Head Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim described both suspects as being white men with brown hair between the ages of 30 and 35. Both were about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 180 pounds.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC (274-6372).
