A 46-year-old Columbia man was charged Wednesday with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in 2004 on Hilton Head Island.

Hammond McQueen Love was arrested by S.C. Law Enforcement Division agents at about 5:45 a.m.; he is accused of criminal sexual misconduct with a minor. Although Love lives in Columbia, he surrendered to authorities in Beaufort Wednesday morning. He was arrested and booked in Beaufort County because that's where the alleged incident occurred, according to SLED spokesman Thom Berry.

Love was released on personal recognizance at about 10:30 a.m. from the Beaufort County Detention Center.

The arrest warrant says the incident took place June 27, 2004, at Sea Pines Villas.

It was the second time Love has been accused of sexually assaulting a minor. He was arrested Jan. 25 in connection with the alleged assault of a 13-year-old girl in 2005 in Clemson, according to the SLED website. That incident occurred at the Madren Center on the Clemson University campus, according to the warrant.

Clemson University Police asked SLED to investigate Love sometime before Thanksgiving, Berry said. He couldn't provide a more specific time frame.

In each incident, the victim knew Love, according to arrest warrants; it's not clear if the same victim was involved in both incidents.

Attempts Wednesday to reach Clemson University Police officials were unsuccessful.
