A 46-year-old Columbia man was arrested this morning and charged with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in a 2004 incident on Hilton Head Island.

Hammond McQueen Love was arrested by S.C. Law Enforcement Division agents at about 5:45 a.m. and accused of criminal sexual misconduct with a minor. Although Love lives in Columbia, he was arrested and booked in Beaufort County because that’s where the incident occurred, according to SLED spokesman Thom Berry.

Love was logged into the Beaufort County Detention Center but released on personal recognizance at about 10:30 a.m.

The arrest warrant says the incident took place June 27, 2004, at Sea Pines Villas on Hilton Head Island.

It is the second time in as many months Love has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor. He was arrested Jan. 25 in Clemson in connection with the alleged assault of a 13-year-old girl in 2005, according to the SLED website. That incident occurred at the Madren Center on the Clemson University campus, according to the warrant.

Love was known to the victim in each incident, according to the warrants.
