A man charged in connection with a Michigan murder more than a year ago was arrested Monday on St. Helena Island.
Antonio Demond Watkins, 23, is accused of shooting a 27-year-old man in the head at a gas station in Flint, Mich., on Aug. 30, 2011, according to Michigan news reports.
Police identified Watkins as a suspect three days later, the news reports say. The Genesee County Prosecutor's Office charged Watkins with murder and weapons charges Sept. 8, 2011.
Watkins was native of Flint, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center jail log. He is being held at the detention center pending his extradition to Michigan.
Watkins was arrested on Eddings Point Road, according to Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh. He initially tried to run away but was caught a short time later, McIntosh said.
The U.S. Marshal Service is leading the investigation. Attempts to reach the Marshal's Charleston District public information officer Amanda Lyons were unsuccessful Tuesday.
