In-person unemployment services cut in Jasper, Hampton counties

info@islandpacket.comFebruary 4, 2013

Those seeking in-person help with unemployment services in Jasper and Hampton counties will face a longer drive in a few weeks.

The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce is cutting those services at some locations due to continued descreases in federal funding, according to a news release.

Beginning Feb. 19, residents who used the Jasper County location for in-person unemployment services will have to travel to the Beaufort location, 164 Castle Rock Road. Those using the Hampton County location will have to travel to the agency’s Walterboro location, 101 Mable T. Willis Blvd.

In total, the department is cutting in-person unemployment services at 16 of its 56 agencies across the state.

The offices won’t close; S.C. Works career centers will still be open at those locations according to spokeswoman Adrienne Fairwell.

The services will still be available for free online at mybenefits.dew.sc.gov. Residents can file initial and weekly unemployment claims, change contact information and more on the site.

Weekly claims can also be filed by calling 866-831-1724.

According to the news release, those affected by the change have already been notified by mail.
