Sun City Softball Team places second in Tournament of Champions

The Sun City Travel Softball Team competed in the 60 AA division of the ISSA Tournament of Champions last weekend in Tampa, Fla., and came away as the tournament runner-up.

The Sun City team went 5-3 on the weekend, including an 18-17 win over a team from West Virginia. Sun City scored seven runs with two outs in the last inning, with Mike Coriale driving in Dean Waters with the winning run.

Sun City defeated Spring Ford (Pa.), 16-4, to set up a rematch in the championship game, but Spring Ford captured the title with a 26-11 win.

Sun City shortstop Doug Baker and outfielders Red Kopytko and Tom DaParma made the tournament's All World team. Each of them batted at least .750 and combined for 57 hits.

Sluggers Rick Dory and Don Feldkamp combined for 30 hits in the tournament. Dean Waters, Rich Matera, John Heere and Dave Sauer combined for a total of 41 hits. Craig Waite, Bill Wealleans, Fitz Harding and Pete Bonanno added another 24 hits to the Sun City attack.

Bob Lee and Mike Coriale handled the pitching duties.

The Sun City team is next scheduled to play in a tournament in central Florida on Feb. 23-24.
