Tabor Vaux has won the District 9 Beaufort County Council seat.

Vaux, who on Tuesday defeated Mark Lawson to win a Republican primary for the Bluffton-area seat, was declared the seat’s overall winner Friday at noon.

"Tabor Vaux is the winner," said Scott Marshall, executive director of the Beaufort County Board of Elections & Registrations.

There were no Democrats or petition candidates running for the seat. Vaux was named the overall winner after no write-in candidates notified the elections board that they were running before today’s noon deadline. Vaux, 29, defeated Lawson 530-297 on Tuesday in the district that includes neighborhoods around Old Town Bluffton, New Riverside, Westbury Park and Daufuskie Island.

"Now its just time to get to work," Vaux said. "There is a lot of catching up to do and a lot of issues to get up to date on and I am just looking forward to it."

Vaux, an attorney with the Bluffton firm Vaux & Marscher, replaces state Rep. Weston Newton, who resigned from County Council in December upon being sworn in to the S.C. House.

Vaux will be sworn in Monday at 10 a.m. at Council Chambers, in the Beaufort County Administration Building in Beaufort.
