At Hilton Head Christian Academy, head football coach Tommy Lewis used Tyler Chisholm in just about every big situation this season on the way to a second straight SCISAA Class 2-A state championship kicker, punter, running back, pass-rush specialist.
(He is) an incredibly gifted athlete, Lewis said in Chisholms all-area nomination. He can literally play any position. Chisholm became the second member of the Eagles back-to-back title teams to commit to play football for a Division I school when he made his pledge to South Carolina State over the weekend.
For the immediate future, Chisholm, who made the Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette All-Area second team as a punter and made a 52-yard field goal this season, will have a much more specialized task as he competes for the chance to handle all the kicking duties for the Bulldogs next fall.
Chisholm committed while in Orangeburg over the weekend, and Bulldogs assistant Mike Adams was on the island Wednesday to go over what the signing process would be like.
S.C. State had been in touch with me the whole time and were at the top of my list, Chisholm said. I liked how the football players held each other accountable. And the coaches push you on the field and in school.
Also recruited by Sewanee, Chisholm chose a half scholarship from the Bulldogs over attending Clemson or South Carolina as a walk-on. Chisholm said he was still waiting on his acceptance letters from the in-state schools when he made his decision.
He doesnt believe hell redshirt.
I think Ill have a spot right away, he said.
Chisholm will sign his letter of intent first thing in the morning on signing day (Feb. 6), then take part in a 12:45 p.m. ceremony at the school during lunch.
