St. Helena Island-based Chieftess and Head-of-State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Marquetta L. Goodwine, has been chosen as a recipient of the Living Legacy Award by the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History.
Goodwine, known as Queen Quet, and 19 other recipients will be presented with the Living Legacy Award at the 87th Annual Black History Month Luncheon Feb. 23 in Washington, D.C., according to a news release.
Sponsored by Farmers Insurance, the awards program was created in 2012 to feature the year’s Black History Month theme, Black Women in American History and Culture.
The recipients include local, state, national, and international African-American women who work to improve their communities, institutions, organizations, and family life.
Toyota and the National Audubon Society awarded Goodwine a $10,000 grant last year to launch a yearlong outreach campaign to engage members of the Gullah/Geechee Nation from Jacksonville, N.C., to Jacksonville, Fla., in the protection of endangered species.
