Willie Doe remembers several plays from his senior season, moments that will stick with the Battery Creek High School defensive end.

His sack at Whale Branch Early College High School just before halftime. A 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Garrett Academy.

A screen pass he snuffed out against Burke, a near-interception Doe might have taken to the house.

The last play captured Doe’s value to the Dolphins’ defense, Battery Creek coach Jim Shuman said.

“Willie has a great understanding of the game,” Shuman said. “He has the ability to anticipate what the other team is going to do.” Newberry College was sold, starting Doe’s junior year. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound end has committed to the Wolves and plans to sign next week.

Doe visited this fall, and then took his official visit this past weekend, touring the campus and facilities.

“It’s a nice little quiet town where I can sit and focus on my work and football,” Doe said. “They have a nice team and campus, nice people in the community.”

Doe chose Newberry over an offer from Limestone. He also received interest from Charleston Southern, Georgia State and The Citadel.

He played primarily at defensive end the past two seasons, a luxury at a smaller school without big numbers. He played a game and a half on the offensive line this season, after an injury to fellow senior Justin Frazier, and was a member of each special teams unit during the year.

Doe finished with 107 tackles, 12 for loss, and had eight sacks to help lead the Dolphins to the Class 2-A playoffs and earn a spot on the Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette’s All-Area first team.

Doe, who said he first decided to play college football in middle school, expects to redshirt as a freshman while studying business management. He said Wolves coaches liked his height and aggressiveness.

Shuman said Newberry is getting a leader. When the Dolphins allowed an opponent to score, Doe took it personally, Shuman said, returning to the sideline and vowing it wouldn’t happen again.

He learned to read an offensive lineman’s feet to recognize plays, like the halfback screens, and read the running backs and quarterbacks for any tells. He helped teammates do the same. He played defensive tackle and even linebacker briefly, when the need arose.

His goals for Newberry are modest — earn a degree, get bigger and faster, dominate his man off the ball. Shuman believes he will get there.

“His maturity as a player was a huge impact for us this year,” Shuman said.
