Recreation briefs, Jan. 30: Area runners compete at Jimmy Carnes Indoor Invitational

Van Der Meer Tennis Center hosting Free Day of Tennis for kids on Feb. 2

More than a dozen area athletes took part in the Jimmy Carnes Indoor Invitational over the weekend in Gainesville, Fla.

The area runners, who competed under the team name of the Foot Locker Flyers, were led by Jack Manesiotis' second-place finish in the Boys 17-18 3,000 meters (9:07.3) and his fifth-place finish in the mile (4:34.3).

The rest of the top area finishers include:

  • Cisco Ferre, Boys 15-16 -- second place, mile

  • Colton Hennessey, Boys 17-18 -- fourth, 800 meters; eighth, mile.

  • Mallory Liggett, Girls 13-14 -- fourth, mile; sixth, 800 meters.

  • Noa Pagatpatan, Boys 1-16 -- sixth, 800 meters; sixth, mile.

  • Sam Beattie, Boys 15-16 -- fourth, 3,000 meters; 11th, mile.

  • Jack Beattie, Boys 15-16 -- fifth, 3.000 meters.

  • Phillip Evans, Boys 13-14 -- second, mile; fourth, 800 meters.

  • Kris Geiger, Boys 13-14 -- 10th, 800 meters.

  • David Robinson, Boys 13-14 -- 12th, 800 meters.

  • Robbie Iulo, Boys 17-18 -- personal best (54.7) in the 400 meters.

  • Chandler Boathouse, Boys 17-18 -- personal best (2:12.3), 800 meters.

  • FREE DAY OF TENNIS

    Van Der Meer Tennis Center is hosting its Free Day of Tennis for kids from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

    Children ages 3-10 of all tennis abilities are welcome.

    A coach, along with the Van Der Meer teaching staff, will conduct demonstrations, games, fitness exercises, match play and drills. There will be pizza and prizes, as well.
