Car torched at Burton Wells Recreation Center

A car fire late Monday at the Burton Wells Recreation Center was "intentionally set," authorities say.

A Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputy was patrolling the property at about midnight when he discovered the fire near the football fields toward the back of the park.

The white Infinity that burned was valued at $4,500, according to a Sheriff's Office report. The Burton Fire District could not determine whom the vehicle belonged to, according to Battalion Chief Matt Maichel.

"The fire is suspicious, and there was obvious evidence that it was intentionally set," Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh said, but she declined to give further details because the investigation continues. Maichel said fire personnel ruled the cause suspicious because of the location, time of night and because no one was in the area.

Anyone with information on the incident can call the sheriff's non-emergency number at 843-524-2777.
