EVENTS Student works of art will be on display in the annual Promising Picassos Student Art Exhibition, which runs Feb. 7-28 in the Bank of America room of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. The Promising Picassos event is presented annually by the Island School Council for the Arts. The student art exhibition, now in its 21st year, is open to all students, grades three through 12 in the public, private and home schools of southern Beaufort County. An opening artist reception will be 5-7 p.m. Feb. 7.
OTHER The second Zapata Initiative is under way. Participating students in Hilton Head Island middle and high schools will submit artwork portraying any athletic endeavor or well-known sports figure as a follow-up to the London Olympics. Five jurors select the winners at the end of each challenge. More than $1,000 in prize money will be awarded to the young artists in both schools. An exhibit of more than 100 pieces of art will be on display at the Hilton Head Island High School. The winning works will be honored at the Art League Walter Greer Gallery early in March.

Parent University is an opportunity for parents and community members to access the wealth of local experts to sharpen their skills and awareness on various topical subjects. The national program is designed to create stronger and better educated communities. Child care for those 12 and younger will be provided at no charge. ACHIEVEMENTS Seventh-grader J.D. Monts and eighth-grader Alex Parsick each placed third (by grade) in the S.C. Independent School Association Regional Spelling Bee. Whitaker Gannon is advancing to the Poetry Out Loud state finals March 16 in Columbia. Whitaker competed in the Lowcountry regional contest held Jan. 13 in Charleston. The state champion will compete in the national finals and a shot at a $20,000 scholarship.
