The Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority fired its general manager Friday.
The agency's board of directors, which made the decision, would not give a reason for Ken Griffin's dismissal, which was effective immediately.
"This is a personnel matter, and we will not discuss details due to privacy considerations," Brandy Gray, BJWSA board chairman, said in a news release.
Attempts Friday to reach Griffin for comment were unsuccessful.
Ed Saxon, the district's deputy general manager for engineering and operations, has been named acting general manager. Saxon has more than 20 years of experience at the water district.
"We look forward to continuing to serve our customers with superior water and sewer services and have the utmost confidence in Ed and our excellent staff to do so," Gray said in the release.
Griffin was hired in 2011 from the Tampa, Fla., area, where he helped manage water utilities for Hillsborough County. Before that, he worked for the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, largest water district in Mississippi.
He took over general manager duties from longtime BJWSA head Dean Moss in September 2011. Griffin's starting pay was $140,000 a year.
BJWSA spokesman Matthew Brady also would not discuss what spurred Griffin's firing. He declined to say whether Griffin was accused of any wrongdoing.
Brady said Saxon would run the authority, which has about 160 employees and provides drinking water to 150,000 Lowcountry residents, for "the foreseeable future."
