Beaufort nonprofit, event, business and marketing representatives will talk about the new accommodation tax grant process and partnerships with local organizations at a marketing summit this weekend.

The event, which is open to the public, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Council Chambers, City Hall, 1911 Boundary St.

The accommodations tax, often referred to as a bed tax, is a levy on overnight lodging to fund programs promoting tourism and attract visitors from out of the area.

Grants from the tax will be decided based on accountability and cooperation with other organizations around four key areas -- arts history and culture, events and festivals, the arts, and outdoor recreation -- identified during a December tourism summit.

Grant applications will be sent out to previous applicants and attendees of the tourism summit, and will be available online in within two weeks, Jeff Evans, chairman of the Tourism Development Advisory Committee, said.

A due date and applicant interviews have not been set.

The summit is a follow-up to one held last year, during which about 100 people explored Beaufort's most marketable assets.
