EVENTS Hilton Head Christian Academy hosts the South Carolina Independent Schools Association Regional Spelling Bee on 9 a.m. Thursday. Participating schools include The Habersham School, Cross Schools, Beaufort Academy, Hilton Head Preparatory School, St. Andrew's School, St. Francis Catholic School, Thomas Heyward Academy, St. Paul's Academy, St. Peter Catholic School and HHCA. More than 120 students in grades 3 through 8 will compete. Two representatives from each grade will earn seats to compete in the SCISA State Spelling Bee in February. The community is welcome to attend. Admissions open house is 7 p.m. Jan. 24.

HELPING HANDS The second-grade students will sponsor a shoe drive to support Soles4Souls. This organization collects shoes (both new and used) for people in need. The drive will last until Tuesday. OTHER Hilton Head Island High School will host the third annual Parent University, a Hilton Head Island Cluster School initiative, at 6 p.m. Feb. 5. All parents, grandparents and caregivers of students of all ages are invited to attend these free workshops. Parent University is an opportunity for parents and community members to access the wealth of local experts to sharpen their skills and awareness on various topical subjects. The national program is designed to create stronger and better-educated communities. Child care for ages up to 12 will be provided at no charge. Registration will start at 5:30 p.m. Pre-registration is encouraged as seating is limited to 250 registrants.
