Tyler Wilson sat on the floor in front of his teammates Friday, the closest view in the Battery Creek High School gymnasium to study the action on the mat.
The Beaufort High senior wrestler also paced behind his team's bench, white earbuds dangling, until he saw something worth bringing to a teammate's attention.
He'd shout the name, demonstrate a move and watch the mat to see if his instincts were correct. Sometimes they were, sometimes not. Either way, he was doing his part to help the Eagles win.
He hopes to help push his team through two more matches today.
Beaufort High rolled Conway, 53-12, to advance to today's semifinals of the Coach Trap Memorial wrestling tournament. The Eagles will face rival Battery Creek for the right to advance to the championship.
The Dolphins defeated Chapin 49-27 to advance to the semifinals.
"I'm ready to wrestle them," Wilson said. "Hyped up."
Wilson, an offensive lineman on the football team, dropped 30 pounds to wrestle at 220 this season. Eagles football coach Mark Clifford, watching the action Friday, joked that he would have played Wilson at linebacker had he been that slim in the fall.
Wilson said he doesn't mind the move, wants to help the Eagles win a region championship. He cut the weight with spin drills and by watching what he eats. Beaufort High coach Bill Damude reminded his wrestlers they had to weigh the same today as they did Friday, to be mindful of their diet until after today's matches.
He expects a battle.
Battery Creek took two matches after an inspired practice Thursday. The Dolphins, down on themselves after dropping a tight match to Richmond Hill on Wednesday, returned to basics during Thursday's practice -- getting their hips back, looking away from half-nelsons, working on stand-ups and pin combinations, said Isaiah Sloan, who earned two pins Friday at 182.
"We wrestled with a lot of heart tonight, it made me want to go out there and win," Sloan said. "... We just didn't want to lose again at home."
A blind draw set the bracket for Friday's first round. A few late withdrawals shuffled the lineup. Whale Branch Early College High School pulled out Thursday night. St. John's and Lugoff-Elgin were other late scratches.
The moves meant Beaufort High received a first-round bye and Battery Creek a first-round match with Beaufort High's junior varsity squad.
Damude said he wouldn't have minded wrestling two matches Friday to give his guys more mat time. But he had them arrive early in the afternoon to warm up on the mats for an hour, which Damude was happy about when he saw the draw.
Battery Creek and Beaufort High will wrestle for the first time this season.
"It's always a fun match," Damude said.
