Former state Sen. John Kuhn, a Charleston Republican, will launch his bid for the 1st Congressional District seat Thursday.

Kuhn, who practices law in Bluffton and Charleston, will tour all five counties in the district that day, including a 9 a.m. stop at the Bluffton Squat & Gobble, 1231 May River Road in Bluffton, and a 10:15 a.m. stop at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in Beaufort. The public is invited.

In another development, comedian Stephen Colbert's sister has announced plans to run for the seat. Elizabeth Colbert-Bush will file next week as a Democrat, according to her campaign manager.

The Charleston native is development director at the Clemson University Restoration Institute in North Charleston.

A second Democrat, Martin Skelly of Charleston County, also announced Friday that he is running in the special election.

The primaries are March 19, runoffs April 2 and the special election May 7.
