This is not working out as planned. We had early warmth, but now temperatures are falling fast. Winds are gusting up to 28 mph, but rain hasn't arrived as expected. It's pouring from Macon to August, about a hundred miles north. What happened? The Atlantic air mass pushed back harder than expected, driving the Gulf air mass low over Alabama and now North Georgia. That’s allowing very cold air to catch up with the rainfall, which is now mixing with snow and freezing rain in many North Georgia locations. Accumulations of almost twice as much snow as originally forecast are now expected overnight. There is a remarkable split in Georgia: sunshine and upper 70s in the east, and drizzle with temperatures in the mid-40s to near freezing in the west.

The timing and the tracking continues to be critical to forecasting into this evening. The boundary between air masses is racing into our area, but precipitation along the front has all but dissipated. Strong upper level jet streams crossing the Florida panhandle may cause new showers this evening. As this complex winter storm races to New England by dawn, clouds will clear, winds will lessen, and temperatures will turn sharply colder overnight. After the past days' record highs, it will feel much colder. It will be a cloud-free sky Friday, with a high in the mid 50s. For the weekend, expect dry weather and temperatures pushing 60.
