Whale Branch boys hold on to No. 1 ranking

The Whale Branch Early College High School boys basketball team held on to the No. 1 ranking in Class 1-A in the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association polls released Monday.

The Warriors (12-2, 2-0 Region 5-A) went 2-0 last week with a 95-36 win over Branchville and a 66-40 win against Estill. The Warriors face Bethune-Bowman on Tuesday night at home and host No. 4 Allendale-Fairfax on Saturday in a battle of the top two teams in the region and two of the top four in the state.

The Whale Branch girls are ranked No. 7 this week, dropping two spots from last week. The Warriors (10-3) won their only game last week, downing Estill 64-48.

Whale Branch is the only area school ranked, but some region opponents of area schools are in the polls.

On the girls side, Hilton Head Island hosts Class 3-A No. 1 Orangeburg-Wilkinson on Tuesday night.

Colleton County, ranked No. 8 in the 4-A girls poll, hosts Region 8-AAAA foe Beaufort High Friday night. And Whale Branch's Region 6-A rival Denmark-Olar is fifth in the Class 1-A poll.

For the boys, Beaufort High's Region 8-AAAA rival Summerville moves into the Class 4-A poll at No. 10 after defeating the Eagles 58-53 on Friday.

Battery Creek's Region 6-AA foe Woodland is 10th in the 2-A boys poll. The Dolphins lost 62-58 on Jan. 4 at Woodland.
