Bike rider hospitalized after hit head-on by car in Bluffton

Published: January 15, 2013

A 70-year-old woman pushing her bicycle on a dirt trail near The Willows subdivision in Bluffton was hit by a car Saturday morning amid heavy fog.

The S.C. Highway Patrol said that Carol Carson of Sun City Hilton Head could not be taken by helicopter for medical treatment because of the weather conditions. She was taken by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said a 41-year-old woman driving a 2003 Mercedes sedan had missed her turn and struck Carson head-on. The driver has been cited for driving too fast for conditions, Wyant said.

Carson was on a dirt trail at the end of Lake Point Drive, which is a popular shortcut for cyclists to Old Miller Road and Palmetto Bluff.

Hospital spokesman Michael Notrica said he could not provide Carson’s medical condition.
