Many reasons behind happy Presbyterians

info@islandpacket.comJanuary 13, 2013

Please permit a longtime Presbyterian elder to respond to the advertisement in your paper from another group of longtime Presbyterians appealing to "unhappy" Presbyterians to form a new church.

The notice gives two reasons for a new Presbyterian church in Beaufort: The Presbyterian Church (USA) is liberal and permits the ordination of gays; and the only two Presbyterian churches in Beaufort belong to the PCUSA. Ergo, a Presbyterian in Beaufort is either liberal, uninformed or unhappy.

I, for one, am none of these. I am really happy with my church.

I have an invitation to not only unhappy Presbyterians, but also to all who seek true happiness: Come to a Sunday service at Sea Island Presbyterian Church and observe the joyful worship led by joyful people. Pastors Steve, Heather, Jack and John celebrate with God's people through Word and Sacrament. Listen to the joyful music led by Charley Frost, and come to one of our many special musical events. Watch the happy children as our storyteller Aaron plants seeds of faith. Observe the joy of fellowship after the service or at our Wednesday Kirk night suppers. Notice all the hugging and kissing; no "frozen chosen" here.

But why are we a happy church? Because we follow the first question of the Westminster Catechism: "What is the chief end of humankind? To glorify God and enjoy Him forever."

We find that joy and happiness in Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life. Be happy. Come and see.
