Hilton Head mayor recognizes 3 citizens

Jack Alderman, Roberta Foss and Charles E. Simmons Jr. have been recognized by Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin as the town's citizens of the month.

Alderman has served in many leadership roles with United Way and is a member of First Presbyterian Church. He is a former chairman of the Greater Island Council and recently was named executive director of the Hilton Head Island Institute.

Foss has served as chairwoman of three school improvement councils in Hilton Head Island schools and implemented the adult-learning program, Parent University. She also has volunteered for many other leadership jobs in the schools, including band and ROTC booster clubs.

Simmons is a longtime leader in the native-island community. He helped organize the Spanish Wells-Jonesville Property Owners Association, served as the president of the island's NAACP branch in the 1980s and was a board member of the Native Island Business and Community Affairs. He is an officer at First African Baptist Church.
