'O'Neill Outside' to feature Beaufort fishing trip

mmccombs@beaufortgazette.comJanuary 5, 2013

During Lt. Dan Weekend 3 in September, prominent fisherman O'Neill Williams went sight fishing on the Broad River in Beaufort County with a special guest, Sgt. Major Jesse Acosta, U.S. Army (Ret.).

Acosta, who was visiting Beaufort as a guest of LDW3, lost his vision during a mortar attack in Iraq in 2006.

Soon, everyone can witness just how that fishing trip went. The footage will be aired during an episode of Williams' television program, O'Neill Outside, later this month on Sun Sports, NBC Sports and SportSouth.

Previews will air during the show beginning Monday, while the entire episode will air the week beginning Monday, Jan. 28.

"(Acosta) is a really good spokesman, a really humble but very proud soldier," said Dick Clarke, director of operations for Lt. Dan Weekend. "He spends a lot of time talking during the first part of the show about the Independence Fund and what wounded veterans need to go on with life after their injuries. He's a remarkable man.

"Also, I think it will put Beaufort on the map as a fishing destination, as well as a golfing destination."

Fishing was added to the Lt. Dan Weekend for the first time in 2012 at the suggestion of David Cargile. Tuck Scott of Bay Street Outfitters was the guide for the trip.

Cargile, the fishing coordinator for LDW3, said the show will be a positive for the cause of wounded veterans, the sport of fishing and Beaufort.

"The entire show is (Williams) fishing with Jesse," Cargile said. "I've seen a preview of it. It's going to be a grabber. A guy, totally blind, casting to redfish and catching fish. And a lot of the factual material about Beaufort came from the Chamber of Commerce. It's good stuff. It should be a good show."

According to Clarke and Cargile, Williams says in the preview that this is his favorite among all the shows he's done.

"He caught a really good fish, you can see on the preview," Clarke said. "(Acosta) can't see, but he can feel the tug on the line. O'Neill takes the hook out and lets Jesse hold it and appreciate what he's done.

"But the amazing part is Jesse's blind. Everybody knows he can't sight fish. But they were able to coach him on how to cast the rod, and he does it by feel. That's what makes this rather remarkable, sight fishing for a blind man."

The program also will be posted online at www.oneilloutside.com after its television debut.
